Papaya Playa Project, Mexico

Best Known For
Created by an international team including tastemakers Design Hotels, Papaya Playa Project is a unique paradise that asks you to embark on digital detox and realign yourself with nature.

The Good Stuff
The best part? The experience is delivered with Balearic beats on the beach, stylish rough luxe digs and a remarkable setting on Tulum’s coast. An eco-resort made up of basic wooden cabanas, more luxurious casitas (complete with birds nests) and two larger casas, this place has a Robinson Crusoe feel with thatched roofs, siesta hammocks and palms from every vista. The structures are dotted along a beautiful stretch of Caribbean beach, and a bar and restaurant serves up traditional and fusion Mexican cuisine with excellent results. By night the discoball hangs above a sand dancefloor while local and international DJs spin tracks, and tequila-laden cocktails keep everyone well watered through the night.

The Vibe
PPP is relentless in its cry for you to relax, with yoga classes, tai chi, meditation and a full spa all on offer. After a day of physical and spiritual rejuvenation this is the place to be after dark, with both locals and tourists heading to the PPP party.

Inside the hotel – 9/10
Natural and ecologically sourced furnishings are paired with luxurious amenities in the rooms. There are few outlets and no TV or Wi-Fi, but touches like locally sourced honey toiletries, vibrant appliquéd cushions and stunning ocean views more than make up for any lacking in this department.

Outside the hotel – 10/10
Nestled on a part of Mexico’s coast that’s held importance for Maya culture for hundreds of years, at PPP you’re no more than 5 miles drive or cycle to the ancient Tulum ruins, breathtaking cenotes and deep Mexican jungle. Further afield is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world and countless species of wildlife. Within stumbling distance of the hotel you’ll also find simple local restaurants and stylish international eateries, along with a few boutiques and outdoor bars.
