Marco Cilia, Hotel Americano NYC

“Bringing culture to a brand is an important task but also a difficult one. It needs to fit with the brand and feel organic.” Marco Cilia

Marco is currently General Manager of Hotel Americano in NYC & VP of Operations for Grupo Habita in North America. He oversees the expansion of the group in the US. Marco joined the group in January 2012, when he was recruited from London whilst running Blakes Hotel as GM. He operated hotels in Italy prior to this.

THC: What inspires you and why?
Marco: Generally speaking I’m inspired by innovation; individuals and companies who not only have a vision but also have the knowledge and the strength to translate an idea into a successful business.

THC: How did you get into your business?
Marco: I actually studied international finance at University and was heading towards a totally different career path. I had the chance to get out of it and try hospitality for a while. I never went back.

THC: What are you working on right now?
Marco: I currently run Hotel Americano in New York City while looking after the group’s expansion in the USA with new openings scheduled in Chicago and Los Angeles.

THC: How do you see your space evolving?
Marco: I see it getting better and better. It is my goal on a daily basis to improve our business and the guest experience we offer. This is the key to success.

THC: Who is your hero or icon?
Marco: I don’t really have a hero or icon, there are a few people though who have strongly influenced me throughout my career path. As GM at Blakes Hotel in London, I worked closely with Anouska Hempel, world famous designer and creator of the world’s first boutique hotel. Currently as GM of Hotel Americano in New York and VP of Operations for Grupo Habita in North America, I work closely with the partners, Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha. Their passion for art and design, coupled with a deep understanding of neighbourhoods and communities is truly inspirational.

THC: What is your favourite spot around the world?
Marco: Being a hotelier, I like to talk hotels: Hotel Costes in Paris for the vibe and clientele. Blakes Hotel in London for its charm. It is truly a magical place. W Hotel in the Maldives, the most beautiful resort holiday.

THC: What is your favourite injection of culture into a brand?
Marco: The one that fits. Bringing culture to a brand is an important task but also a difficult one. It needs to fit with the brand and feel organic.
