The Marker, Dublin

Best Known For
Life is all about geometry, it’s true, whether we like it or not we function at any given time in a space. How we interact and function in that space is down to the craft of the architect. Time will tell whether Manuel Aires Mateus has created a masterpiece with The Marker Hotel, but when sat in the sweeping lobby bar, sipping the perfect espresso martini, admiring the ceilings and walls that look like some giant hands have reached deep into the building and removed the ground floor area to reveal such a beautiful void. It’s hard to deny him that accolade.

The Good Stuff
The brasserie, lobby and bar are all open and connected along the length of the ground floor giving a great feeling of depth and scale, without losing that touch of urban intimacy the weary city traveller may crave. There are plenty of spots to drop the laptop, kickback and observe without feeling detached but somehow connected to the invisible fibres that connect us all. The ground floor hums with waves of human activity as you ascend to the quiet bliss of the stunningly thought out bedrooms. Deep purple carpets, baths big enough for two, floor to ceiling windows and a bed where the magic of gravity does it’s thing and the world can carry on without you…just for a while. The spa located on the mezzanine level direct from the bedrooms with a stunning pool and thermal suite is a triumph of serenity and with so few Dublin city hotels having one, could be the deciding factor for some when booking.

The Vibe
As you once again descend into the hum of the foyer the decisions are tough… turn right into the Brasserie where chef Gareth Mullins has created an amazingly uncomplicated, beautiful, Irish sourced menu….or left to the lobby bar…or carry through and up in a dedicated lift to the rooftop bar that has become the talk of Dublin. The staff are elegantly attentive as you would expect. The rooms are supremely comfortable and the architecture sublime…but it’s for bravery The Marker stands out. This is a brave hotel in a brave district of town and with a brave vision.

Inside the hotel
Brave, beautiful, unique.

Outside the hotel
The city in all it’s glory is at your feet. Adjacent to many bars restaurants and theatres.
