THE PIG, DEVON

BEST KNOWN FOR

Being one of the many Pigs located all around the UK. Founded by hotel legend, Robin Hutson who original started and later sold Hotel du Vin. The Pig’s promise is great food and drink, set in amazing surroundings with rooms upstairs – but to be fair, they had me at Hutson.

THE GOOD STUFF

The team were so friendly and slick, you never really felt they were part of the hotel. They seemed more like folks who happened to be more knowledgeable than you about where everything was. Design wise the place strikes an amazing chord – amazing country house on grand land with features lovingly restored and wholly original. Again, it never feels like a hotel, and that’s where The Pig does what The Pig does best – affords guests privilege while making them feel totally relaxed.

THE VIBE

The crowd is what you’d expect in Devon, from Barbour to Range Rover complete with flat caps and wellies – it was winter when we went. Atmosphere wise the dining room was so simple you couldn’t help but be impressed. Nothing pretentious on the plate or in the air, just simple but very, very good. Ingredients come off the nearby allotment farm – the dream, we know.

IN THE HOTEL – 8/10

At the hotel you’ve got bar, restaurant, allotment, shed and ample grounds – so if you love nature you’ll never get bored. That said, if you don’t you’re in for a long weekend friend.

AROUND THE HOTEL – 5/10

There’s not much around you, neighbouring or further – but that’s ok because when you’re at The Pig, you’re at The Pig – so unplug and pig out.
