Night Hotel, New York

Best Known For
Inspired (apparently) by “Gotham after dark”, Night Hotel, centrally located in the heart of downtown Manhattan is one of the more esoterically themed hotels I have come across. A combination of gothic and noir-inspired monochrome décor featuring black and white interiors in a dimly-lit environment and a purple hued exterior with a mysterious castle-styled entrance.

The Good Stuff
It’s a simple formula; this hotel is a matter of personal taste. If you like your hotel to be dark, dramatic, edgy and have had your fill of minimalist hotel rooms and lobbies, then Night Hotel is certainly more left-field. Each of the 72 rooms in this sleek and chic hotel is kitted out with a plasma TV, in-room BOSE sound system with iPod connection and luxury bathroom products. Additional thoughtful add-ons include a complimentary copy of the New York Times each morning and free continental daily breakfast (always a bonus). The room size is small compared to other rooms at the same price points in the city but the fab location outweighs this minor annoyance.

The Vibe
The Nightlife Restaurant and Lounge at Night Hotel is ideal for a pre-theatre cocktail before curtain call, and also offers delicious snacks and an extensive selection of great beer and wine. The best Broadway shows New York has to offer are located just steps away from the hotel.

Inside the hotel – 6/10
There is no doubt that Night Hotel is a unique concept in hotel design. Downside for me was I sometimes was not sure if it was day or night. I could almost have been in a casino in Vegas. I prefer my hotels to be minimalist, bright and airy. Night Hotel is the antithesis of this so if it wasn’t for a scheduled work trip, I may not have selected to stay at this hotel. Simply a question of personal taste.

Outside the hotel – 8/10
These days when I travel it is all about location and convenience and Night Hotel has an unbeatable location with close access to some of the best New York attractions including Times Square, The Rockefeller Centre and the best Broadway theatres. There are several nearby subway stations connecting all of downtown Manhattan should you wish to venture further. There is a real energy about the surrounds of this hotel which is contagious and if convenience is important to you, then go for this hotel!
